Be Vulnerable

Be Vulnerable
One Thought for you to consider:
Strength and power are glorified in our fast-paced world, and vulnerability is often overlooked. If one is vulnerable, sometimes they are called weak and incapable of leading at a high level. However, it's time to recognize that vulnerability is not a sign of weakness; it speaks to one’s ability to be authentic.
Let’s first define vulnerability. It's the courage to expose our true selves and acknowledge our fears, uncertainties, and imperfections. Brene Brown, a best-selling author who often speaks about vulnerability, defines it as the "core of all emotions and feelings."
I hope that as leaders, we challenge the stereotype that vulnerability equates to weakness and model it for others. Vulnerability looks different for each one of us, but as leaders, we must openly embrace vulnerability. Here are three qualities we often see in leaders who embrace vulnerability:
Admitting Mistakes: A vulnerable leader is willing to admit when they've made a mistake. This openness fosters a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Expressing Uncertainty:
Leaders who acknowledge when they don't have all the answers demonstrate vulnerability. This can create an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their uncertainties.
Seeking Feedback:
A vulnerable leader actively seeks feedback from their team and values different perspectives. This openness to input contributes to a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
Vulnerability is a key factor in building trust. When leaders are open and genuine, it creates a foundation of trust within the team. Again, it's important to note that vulnerability in leaders doesn't mean being weak or indecisive. Instead, it's about being secure enough to be authentic, admitting imperfections, and creating a culture that values openness and continuous improvement. Vulnerability can contribute to stronger connections, increased trust, and a more resilient and adaptive organizational culture.
Two Quotes from Dr. Bishop:
"VULNERABILITY is less about YOU and more about the world seeing you for your authentic self!"
“Vulnerability brings about humility in yourself and empathy from others.”
One Question for you to answer:
Reflect on how you respond when you feel vulnerable. Do you tend to withdraw, become defensive, or open up to others?
